All three of these great musicians have performed for us before in various combinations and it is great to welcome them back in this format.
On paper, Brigitte DeMeyer’s musical and geographical journey down-home seems downright unlikely. The daughter of Belgian and German immigrants, she was raised first in the Midwest, then California and, entirely on her own, started latching onto rootsy sounds, R&B 45s and cowboy songs. She has built a solid foundation with her first four albums, collaborating with giants of the Americana world—world-class drummer and producer Brady Blade especially—and showing herself to have a wonderfully natural feel for country-steeped, blues-infused roots-pop, right down to her supple, peppery singing.
‘Rose of Jericho’ is album number five for the acclaimed independent singer-songwriter, but it also marks a trio of significant firsts: her first time taking the reigns as co-producer; her first time recording in Nashville since she made it her home; and her first time telling her stories of balancing motherhood and music. On the new album, DeMeyer expanded her impressive stable of collaborators with contributions from full-throated force of nature Mike Farris, guitar gurus Will Kimbrough and Doug Lancio and Sam Bush.
Will Kimbrough is hungry. The youthful singer, songwriter, award-winning guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, performer and bandleader has a voracious appetite for every aspect of music. Born and raised in the deep south of the Alabama Gulf Coast, he ingested eclectic FM radio sounds and the music of nearby New Orleans. In his quest to develop his musical capacities to their fullest, Will Kimbrough has become a modern-day Renaissance Man. True to his search for universal truths, his profound musical knowledge and expert creations reflect years of learning the intricacies of folk, blues, gospel, country, rock’n’roll, punk rock and jazz.
With songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Jack Ingram, Todd Snider and others, Kimbrough’s multidisciplinary approach has led to many desirable collaborations in the studio and on-stage with well-known artists, including Rosanne Cash, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Gomez, Emmylou Harris, the Jayhawks, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Miller, John Prine, Toumani Diabate, Kim Richey, Josh Rouse, Matthew Ryan, Billy Joe Shaver, Todd Snider, Mavis Staples, Garrison Starr, Adrienne Young, and others. The multi-talented, active father of two continues to make a lasting contribution to every project he produces, performs and creates.
Chris Donohue tells his story. “I was born in New York City in the late sixties and raised along the Mineola line of the Long Island Railroad by an English professor and an airline worker. Since moving to Tennessee in ’94 I’ve had the privilege of recording and/or performing with Emmylou Harris, Collective Soul, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Ben Folds, Lyle Lovett, Allison Moorer, Solomon Burke, Suzy Bogguss, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch, Pete Seeger, Brendan Benson, Sam Bush, The McGarrigles, Jim Lauderdale, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, Lee Ann Womack, Vince Gill, T.S. Monk, Phil Keaggy, Holly Williams, Larry Carlton, Over the Rhine, Vigilantes of Love, Sixpence, Jars of Clay, Fleming and John, Nashville Chamber Orchestra, and a great many other bands and songwriters.
Most days I’m writing, producing, and recording out of Swinglewood Studio in East Nashville. I tour several times a year with Emmylou Harris as one of her Red Dirt Boys. Occasionally Al Perkins, Brady Blade, and myself get together to record and perform as Big Dog 3, a power trio for the western-shirted set. Coal Train Railroad, a jazz project for kids I’ve developed with my friend Katy Bowser, made its Lincoln Center debut in February 2011 and continues to lay track around the world via its blog and podcast.
